Napier University Student Placement

Hi, my name is Sharon Lennie. I am a student currently on placement with LIFT OFF. I am doing a postgraduate course in Career Guidance and Development at Napier University. Prior to studying I worked as a manager in the voluntary sector for 15 years. This placement has offered me an opportunity to learn all about widening access programmes like LIFT OFF as I had limited knowledge before my placement. I've also been able to apply some of my learning from university into my practice.

I wasn't aware that the programme covers such a large geographical area. It has been really good getting to visit schools across Fife, Dundee and Angus. I've enjoyed speaking with young people and I have been involved in the S5 Individual Action Plan (IAP) meetings with some pupils. I've also had an opportunity to work on some of the materials for the S4 Campus Events.

What has struck me over the fortnight is how approachable and committed the staff are to ensuring that young people get the right support to help them to navigate their careers. There is so much work that goes on behind the scenes. The admin staff, development workers and management work really hard to prepare for sessions and events and they liaise regularly with schools, colleges and universities.

The staff at LIFT Off have been so friendly and welcoming towards me. It has been really insightful and informative and I know that I can take the learning from this placement forward in my new career. I'm looking forward to starting a new job as a career adviser in June and hopefully I will get an opportunity in the future to work in partnership with LIFT OFF!
