The Year of Young People

2018 is an important year in educational circles as it is the Scottish Government's Year of Young People. If you haven't heard much about it, it is an inspirational campaign designed to celebrate 'our nation's young people'. As a programme, LIFT OFF we are always keen to inspire and celebrate the successes of our young people across our three regions.

One of the aspects of the campaign that has particularly resonated with LIFT OFF is giving young people the chance to participate in the decisions that will impact their lives. This is something at the very core of what we do - arming our pupils with the skills and information to plan the beginning of their academic and working lives. It is key that we show them the way and encourage their own dreams and take up the offer of a free higher education with a clear understanding of what is expected before heading off.

Our annual residential events, LIFT OFF 2 Success (LO2S), is one of many that pupils experience to aid them in understanding higher education, with information on life at university/college and of what is expected of them while there. It is also a great chance for us to personally get to know each and every young person who attends giving the LIFT OFF Team more of an opportunity to get an idea of each aspiration before molding that dream into a personal, and most importantly achievable, plan.

At the end of Week 1 of LO2S 2018 we had the pleasure of hosting Mike Cantlay, the Chair of the Scottish Funding Council, as our key note speaker. After an interactive talk at the graduation ceremony, Mike got to the heart of what our young people experience at LO2S on his blog piece, 'Making it real': "[the pupils] were buzzing with ideas about where their education could take them." This, to us and the Scottish Funding Council, is why we do what we do.
